60 years of the Berlin wholesale market: a proposal for sustainable further development

Berlin's wholesale market celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2025. It acts as an important hub for Berlin's food supply. However, the continuously increasing turnover of goods places growing demands on the buildings and infrastructure of the historic market.
In a feasibility study, we have made a proposal for the transformation and sustainable further development of the area. It envisages three zones: the core market in the center for retailers, a new public market hall for the urban community in the east and an expansion area in the west. A central axis for shopping on foot connects all the sales halls, while a continuous ring road controls delivery traffic outside. The existing buildings can be retained, refurbished and integrated into a flexibly adaptable modular system. The design thus forms the basis for decades of forward-looking planning that integrates the Berlin wholesale market into urban society and transforms it into a lively, sustainable meeting place.
