The future of Munich’s Gasteig

Following the news that Munich’s search for an investor was unsuccessful, the future of Gasteig’s redevelopment is at stake.
Stefan Sinning, partner in charge for the project, was interviewed by Bayerischer Rundfunk TV to explain the concept of the redevelopment. The feature on culture magazine ‘Capriccio’ explores possible ways forward for the project and is available to watch online.
In the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Susanne Hermanski provides an in-depth insight into the intricacies of the project’s development (paywalled content).
With approximately two million visitors a year, the Gasteig in Munich is the largest cultural center in Europe. After more than 30 years of intensive use, this renowned building is due to be redeveloped. HENN’s design provides a view of what buildings can look like in the future: adapting instead of demolishing and preserving as much of the existing building as possible with minimal intervention. With the addition of a glass bridge, the monolithic structure is opened up to the city, establishing the new Gasteig as a meeting place for a diverse urban society.
