UGM Wholesale Market Munich
Munich's wholesale market, housed in the wholesale market hall or Grossmarkthalle, is the largest municipal food market in Europe, alongside Paris and Barcelona. Up to 850,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables from 83 different countries are sold here each year andoffers a business platform for around 400 companies that sell to restaurateurs, market traders and wholesalers.
Munich's vertical market hall
The area of coverage of the Munich wholesale market - the "belly of Munich" - comprises 5 million people. HENN is planning the new four levels Grossmarkthalle as a flagship project for the city.
An inclined level connects the Grossmarkthalle to its surroundings and makes the site accessible. The building typology will be interpreted afresh and a vertical market hall will be created, extending both upwards and downwards.
The cubature of the individual buildings will adapt organically to the already existing neighbouring building fabric.
"A vertical wholesale store is a mammoth logistical task."
- Fredrik Werner, HENN
Logistical precision
A total of 325 docks for trucks (12t and 40t), vans and cars will be installed on the ground floor and the two basement levels, with direct and efficient traffic routes. Terraced landscapes with sports infrastructure and urban agriculture, as well as restaurants and cafés for employees and the local population are planned above these. Three staggered office volumes with high ceilings are to be created on the upper floors.
Sendling's green lung
Thanks to numerous synergies, the project will provide unique added value: Trading operations and the logistics process will be rendered more efficient on a reduced area. New accessible places are created and the entire neighbourhood is upgraded socially and in terms of urban planning. Representative green roofs form a public landscape on the gradually ascending plateaus.
The construction of the new hall will also free up the valuable inner-city space potential of the existing wholesale market for apartments and public facilities. The Grossmarkthalle will be a new Munich landmark, and is set to become an international reference for the uncompromising implementation of sustainability, for social relevance, efficient logistics and a new building typology.
